Topkapi Palace is one of the most incredible places to visit in Istanbul. Not only is it indescribably beautiful, but it's also steeped in history.
Today, Topkapi Palace is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Istanbul and is definitely worth a visit. For those interested in history, architecture, art and culture, the majestic palace is a real must-see. It offers a unique look into the past and is sure to be a memorable experience.
There are many reasons why you should visit the Topkapi Palace. Here are six:
The palace was not only the home of the sultans and their families for almost 400 years, but also the center of government and administration of the Ottoman Empire. Therefore, it played a central role in the foundation and development of the Ottoman Empire. By visiting it, you can develop a better understanding of the Ottoman history and culture firsthand.
Not only is Topkapi Palace historically significant, but it's also important in terms of architecture and design. The palace complex is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, with its intricate tile work, marble facades, and beautiful gardens. It is made up of more than 400 buildings, all with their own unique style and purpose.
The treasury at Topkapi Palace is one of the most impressive in all of Istanbul! It's packed with beautiful jewelry, heirlooms, ornate weapons, and other priceless treasures. This includes a jewel-encrusted dagger that once belonged to Prophet Muhammad and the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond, the worldwide 4th largest diamond of its kind.
The Sacred Safekeeping Rooms houses some of the most important treasures of the palace. On display are holy relics of the Prophet Muhammad, including the hair from the Prophet’s beard, the tooth he lost during the battle of Uhud, footprints, his mantle and sword. Sacred relics attributed to other prophets are also exhibited, such as the staff of Moses, the sword of David, the tray of Abraham, and the robe of Joseph.
The harem at Topkapi Palace is not to be missed. It is where the sultans, the members of the royal family, including the Queen Mother, the sultan's wives, the concubines and the sultan's minor children lived, and it's full of fascinating history. That’s why a visit to the harem is like taking a step back in time, allowing a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Ottoman elite.
One of the best things about Topkapi Palace is its location. Situated on a hilltop overlooking the Bosphorus strait, it offers stunning views of both Europe and Asia. On a clear day, you can even see across to Greece! One of the best views is enjoyed at the lower level terrace, where the Mecidiye Pavilion is located.
